Everyone else was listening to Miles Davis and all those more "conventional" performers, and modeling their craft after those guys, and anytime I tried to bring Dolphy up to them was a general disinterest because he was too "out there" and because he played the bass clarinet.<br /><br />The last week of school one year, we got our jazz band together with the jazz band from the next high school for a play some tunes and eat pizza event, and in one of our numbers we would go completely down the line and play the same 32 bars until everyone had a chance to improvise for a little bit. Finally my turn came around, and I decided to tear out all the pages from Dolphy's book that I could and went to town.<br /><br />The look of utter shock on everyone's face at the end was well worth it.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
